review of laughter out of place

A truely amazing book, a must for anyone studying anything to do with Latin America. Highlights how race is percieved in Brazil and gives an insight in to the lives of those in the very lowest economic groups. Goldstein's work is an easy read and enjoyable, a book that will make you both cry and laugh.

I highly recommend this book, especially to those with an interest in life within a Brazilian favela and also the political issues that exists in Brazil. The large amount of information and accounts given by the author makes the book very interesting and the stories of everyday life, trials and tribulations of living in a Rio favela given by the people themselves makes this book exciting.
