Not just for dummies
For a "practice book," this is suprisingly good. Most of the time i wouldnt touch these kind of books with a barge pole; they normally consist of extremly easy exersises and say nothing of proper techique or theroy. But this book is different. The exercices actually go up to about grade 4 standard and there are whole chapters devoted to different styles and origins of the drum. This book even has a comprehensive section on traditional drums (played with sticks or hands)and talks about the trad. rhythms and playing method for them. For the newcomer to drumming all parts of the drumset are named and explaned and useful accessories recomended. This is a brilliant book covering easy and complicated rhythms but still managing to make them simple and understandable by use of plain English and no confusing jargon. A real steal.

Drums for Dummies
This book is great and all, but you'll have to go another way if you really want to learn something: I have seen many websites and reviewed many books such as this one, but I have come to one conclusion, and many people know that. Books and websites are not a replacement for good drumming lessons! Go to a concervatorion near you, or find a teacher on your own, but don't think that this book can teach you like a real, live teacher can! Go to drumming lessons for about 2 months, then buy this book. I'm sure it has great hand-excercises and techniques, but to teach you how to play the drums, it can not!
