A great book on a great man

It is often too easy to use the word 'great' when describing an individual. Martin Luther King is one of the few to whom this label is entirely appropriate.

This book gives a fascinating and compelling account of his life and the times in which he carried out his struggle for equality.

There are moments that bring you near to tears and many that make you wonder how supposedly intelligent people could be so blinkered.

The best compliment I can pay Stephen B. Oates is to say that his book does justice to its subject. Whoever you are I strongly recommend you read it and begin to understand why Dr King was so special.

The most humbling read on civil-rights, it is a must to read

Having had a fascination for Martin Luther King as a civil-rights leader and how his passion for non-violence saw his own violent death - this book left me spellbound and completely humbled as to the core focus of his struggle and how he never gave up or personally cited any form of violence. Too many of my words would spoil what this passionate orator has said in this book. It is the sermons and 'rally talks' that really bring home his true feelings and also immense frustrations. One wonders what he would have achieved had he lived another 3 or 4 decades.

A excellent biography of a brilliant man

I challenge any person not to be inspired by this man or this book. Oates writes with feeling and passion in his description of King and with forthrightness and honesty of his fight. King with Gandi and Mandela were arguably the greatest men of the 20th Century let us hope their like is not required in the 21st.

enlightening, portrays MLK, Jr. as I never knew him

I didn't know much about Martin Luther King, Jr. before I found this book in a second hand store and picked it up just because it looked interesting. I am glad I did. I finished this book respecting MLK and his message more than I ever thought possible. It amazes me that MLK so accurately pegged the United States attitudes about racism, social injustice and the Vietnam War in the heat of the moment--a true visionary. It is a shame that whenever somebody in this world tries to change things for the better somebody feels the need to kill them. Stephen Oates' portrayal is honest and forthright. An admirable performance. I highly recommend it.

Reverence from the gut

I was fortunate enough to study under this brilliant and passionate man at the Univ. of Massachusetts. his heart-felt lectures are tangible, leaving the listiner hungry for more when the damn bell rings. Compassion, sympathy, and an overwhelming desire to understand, are the standards which seperate this man from most.
