Customer Reviews:
The ride continues
The roller-coaster ride of a story that Gene Wolfe began in "Nightside the Long Sun" not only continues in this second book of the tetrology, but actually picks up speed. The politics and the personalities get more complex. The characters gain depth as we discover flaws in the "good guys" and virtues in the "bad guys". Wolfe's use of language, metaphor and symbolism are reminiscent of Herman Melville's. As soon as you finish this book, you'll want to pick up the next one in the series. For all related books, search under Gene Wolfe's name for all titles with the word "sun" in them. You will find that the "Long Sun" series is actually part of a mega-series that also includes the "New Sun" and "Short Sun" books.
Well written, interesting, characters are developed.
This book (being the second in the series) prooves to be a much faster paced read with more happening to silk as the story develops. Silk's character is developed (or rather the events surrounding him cause more of him to be defined) and it is a much better book than the first. I finished it just earlier this evening and have already ordered the third to find out the conclusion (or developments) to the hero silk. Makes a good read and is above average for this genre in its standard of writing and its interplay of history, sociological and sci-fi elements with hints but no direct explainations of why things are the way they are. The reader is on a journey with silk to discover just what the "whorl" is and is pas a god or the father of a tyrannical family that moves humanity in a ship across the stars.mmmm I am looking forward to finding out. Worth it.
