Maya Angelou's plight is just one of many tales of life as a young black woman growing up in the 1930s American South. Maya Angelou and her brother Bailey were abandoned by their parents and left in the care of their paternal grandmother, Momma, in a the small town of Stamps, Arkansas. When Maya and Bailey are eventually sent to California to be reunited with their mother, Maya, just eight years old, is brutally raped by her mother's boyfriend. Never recovering from this incident, she refuses to speak for five years, and later falls pregnant at the age of sixteen in an attempt to prove that she is not what she believes to be a "lesbian". "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" is the harrowing tale of Angelou's struggle to, not only be accepted as black and female, but also to accept herself.

I was told to read this book for school, i dont think it would be a book that i would have choosen to read myself but i am extremly glad i did! As soon as i started reading i was intreged i wasent able to put the book down untill i had finished it.The book is so personal and descriptive, it shows how much things have changed and how easy children "get it today" At times the book was a little to informational/discriptive for my liking. i think the book will teach people alot about racism and it was nice to read about how the coulered people back then felt about us instead of the usual oposit. I would advise anyone to read this book as it is not just an amazing book to read it`s true and also very educational.

If you like books by Toni Morrison this should definately be on you're reading list. This fantastic novel enraptured me for a week, I was reading it in every possible spare moment I had. The emotions this book will fill you with are indescribable, you have to read it for yourself. I was recommended this by a college teacher of mine and I am so glad I have read it, I would recommend it especially to those who have not read much Afro-American literature as it is a fantastic introduction to the subject. Enjoy!!!

As a student, I have been asked to research an author that I knew nothing about. I chose Maya because she was always an interest. I read this book to learn more about her. I have discovered that I wish I had learned more about her sooner. Her book inspires people of all races and ages to stop their dreaming and go for their dreams. All her books, especially this one, gives us hope. Thank you, Maya Angelou.
