Zamper is unique in the Gareth Roberts penned Doctor Who New Adventure stories to date for two reasons. Firstly it has the only novel title beginning with a 'Z' and secondly it's readable. The story features the return of one of the series' better enemies - The Chelonians; a race of warlike creatures not unlike giant tortoises; although this lot don't hibernate and definitely wouldn't be found in a cardboard box in the Blue Peter studio.
The plot is actually pretty straightforward for once - The TARDIS crew arrive on a mysterious spaceship and immediately find themselves stranded. The Chelonians are attempting to buy a hugely powerful spaceship with which to spearhead a conquest of the universe whilst the humans selling it are attempting to double-cross them. Throw in a tentacled and extremely slimy creature known as 'Management', a camp croupier named 'Mr Jottipher' and a waitress who is not what she seems and you have a reasonable read. Disappointingly not much else really happens and The Doctor, Benny, Chris and Roz are woefully underused. Still, a step in the right direction...
