A really interesting exploration and a must for anyone working with young women
|
The start point for 'Fast Girls' is the exploration of the idea of the slut, and how the myth is perpetuated especially teenagers in high schools. White advertised in a newspaper, looking for women who had been labelled the school slut, and used their stories as a start point to explore why this myth is perpetuated; archetypes; feminist perspectives; cultural differences regarding women's sexuality; how cruel women are to each other and how rumour works.
Throughout the book, White looks at her own perspectives and prejudices and this makes the book far more 'human' and sympathetic. I read this book in a few hours, it holds your interest and will really make you reflect on your own behaviour and attitudes.
Highly recommended, the best book I've read for a while.
