Customer Reviews:
Give it a try!
This is book is absolutely brilliant as a reference guide. Explanations are clear and concise with numerous examples to aid understanding. Book is aimed for university students yet covers all grammar points from very basic definitions to the nitty gritty of the language. The second half of the book explains functions of the language and how to use speech acts properly. Having problems with grammar, consult this book.
Look around..
I bought this book as a required text for my French course and spent the rest of the year referring to other french grammar text books. I often found explanations vague and the layout illogical and overly segmented. It's always useful to look around for several different grammar explanations and see which you understand best but 9 times out of 10 for me it wasn't in this book. I've barely opened the book since and would certainly open another book first when I want to check a grammar point.
A thorough (and very useful) reference guide
This book is very comprehensive in its treatment of virtually everything a student of French at any level would need to know, covering basics such as articles and adjectives, to more complex structures such as the uses and formation of the subjunctive (scourge of most French students!) in all its tenses. And that's just half the book! The second part covers a wide range of uses that are likely to appear when using French, such as expressing sympathy, or making an argument.

This book is written in clear, simple language designed to help the perplexed student, and with good examples to back up the explanations. It might seem a bit of a thick book, but it is definitely good value for money! I would recommend it to anybody studying French at university, regardless of what level you're at, as it will be an invaluable tool when dealing with the language.
