Not only do you need to purchase the CDs to go with this to use it usefully it is mind-bendingly indepth -- would be very suitable for someone learning Ethiopian to an advanced level because they want to work in the country. Too much information if you just are on a brief trip (& heavy to carry). A better purchase for this would be the pocketsized Lonely Planet Ethiopian Amharic Phrasebook (Paperback). For serious students, however, it's an ESSENTIAL buy.

The Colloquial Amharic course is fantastic, having read through the book the course is divided into easy to follow sections, which fit in well with what I have been used to with other languages.
Unfortunately, with out the cds the book isn't very useful - the huge difference in pronunciation between amharic and roman languages is so different that I don't really think you've any chance of learning the language without the cd/tape.
