A fun fantasy read
|
I really enjoyed this book. It has some very interesting characters and a story line that just keeps you reading. Michelle Sagara's style is easy to access and has some witty dialogue. The story has a darker mysterious side which is not all resolved by the end of the book. Which means that there is lots to look forward to in next books in the series.
So, if you are looking for something that is as fully realised as Tolkien you may be disappointed.
But for a fun and enjoyable read that looks as if there is plenty of material for future stories this is a must read.

Extraordinary

I have been buying quite a lot of authors that are new to me recently, and this is the pick of the bunch. A world as vividly imagined as Tolkien's, but the facts appear slowly; a desperately serious plot; an appealingly drawn and only too human heroine with a mystery in her past; supernatural evil that has been checked but not wholly eradicated by the end of this, the first of a series. I would recommend it to anyone interested in serious fantasy.

good but Im still not sure I understand

good read, interesting characters and a good plot but the explainations just dont go far enough. All the characters stop just before we get to the part that makes everything make sense. a bit frustrating but I couldnt put it down.

You won't be able to put it down

Appealing characters, excellent thought-provoking story line, well written and fast paced, you'll want to know how this book is going to end. It's one of those books where I was dying to flick to the end to make sure that the main character was ok! I didn't sneak a look at the end and I'm glad because it was worth waiting for!
I'd recommend this book - it was a really good read! Really enjoyable.

Cool even on the second read!

I am revisiting this book as I have had a long wait for its sequel and want to refresh my memory (I read a lot!).
And it is as enjoyable as ever second-time around. Realistic characters, with genuine issues and problems, and some fantastic characeter and plot development. One reviewer feels that there are gaps in the lore of the book, but that is not the case - you just have to read carefully - I have found it necessary to back track a little on occasion.
The sequel was much-warranted and long awaited. A sneaky peek at the end of that book reveals that there is to be a third book and boy, am I pleased to find that out.
One of my all time favourites - I love this book. If you like Kelley Armstrong, Laura Anne Gilman, and Lilith Saintcrow; or Lynn Flewelling, Elizabeth Haydon and Catherine Asaro, then you will love this - it's a blend of the former's strong characterisation and believable, empathetic heroines, with the latter's carefully created fantasy worlds with wonderfully imagined inhabitants.
