A fantastic read

One of the most compelling personal stories I've read. Excuse the cliche but Ferzanna Riley really does take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride through her dramatic upbringing. But it's not a sob-fest. The book's peppered with wit and fascinating vignettes highlighting the cultural clashes faced by Pakistanis growing up in Britain. An exciting, funny, heart-rending page turner.

Unbroken Spirit is not accurate

Whilst it is very sad to say the least how Ferzanna was treated and the awful kidnapping of her and her sister, l wholly sympathise, the book was badly written. I was really disappointed that Ferzanna attributed everything to being a muslim when these are more cultural divides than religious dictates. I come from a very secular Pakistani family amd am married to a westerner, l do not recognise from my wide circle alot of the comments that generalise Pakistanis' or muslims. I am sorry truly for what she suffered and that makes interesting reading, but her insight into our culture is limited and not reflective of certainly of middle class asians. The book fails to explain what happened to her sister which is also disappointing and leaves the reader wondering. The book is not written in a balenced way but sadly and even understandably projects alot of bitterness.

heartbreakingly inspiring
|
when I first saw this book I thought 'not another ghost wriiten misery memoir!' but after reading the other reviews I was intrigued. I was impressed to find that the book is all her own work and words, these being all to rare these days.
Ferzanna Riley takes you on an emotional rollercoaster through her turbulent upbringing. She makes you cry, but there are moments that will also make you laugh. The end is truly inspiring. She is one brave lady, especially so for speaking out against her Pakistani culture, and I thoroughly recommend you buy this book. I don't want to give too much away so i'll just say that there are many facets to Ferzanna's story and more to this book than meets the eye.

An amazing book that you just have to read!
|
I have just finished reading this book and, although I have never written a review before, I felt compelled to put pen to paper.
This true story is a real rollercoaster of emotions for the reader but is so well written that I couldn't put it down! It is a terrible account of an abused child's life but incredibly Ferzanna Riley has managed to recall humorous events too! I also learnt so much about Muslim culture that I had not known about or fully understood prior to reading this book.
It is hard to believe that this is the author's first book and I would love to know what has happened in her life since she married her wonderful husband. I really hope that a second book is coming out soon as me, all my family and friends can't wait to continue reading about this incredible life story.

Amazing book which gives hope to other childhood abuse survivors
|
I highly recommend this book to anyone!! Not only is it written in an easy to read and very informative style, but you will also get hooked on the story. I read the book in one day as i was not able to put it away once i had started.
It amazed me how strong Ferzanna was and is and that she never lost her sense of humour even after all that happened to her.
The conflict of religion and life style was also written with great passion and detail. I learned a lot of things about muslim culture
, their life style and religion which i hadn't known before.
Thank you Ferzanna for such an amzing and emotional book that gives hope to other childhood abuse survivors that something good can come out of every life story, no matter how hard the start might have been.
A book that will make you laugh, cry, and question our daily lifes and believes.
