Customer Reviews:
Fabulous
This is a book that I will always remember. Although harrowing at times I found that the story was written with compassion and a great deal of humour. Please don't be put off reading it, thinking it will all be doom and gloom because it isn't. The pay off is more than worthwhile and despite it's content, it is a very uplifting story. I can't wait to read the sequel which I've just ordered.
Disturbing but great read!
Although I found this book quite disturbing in parts I would say it was a fantastic read. From the beginning to the end it kept me hooked to the covers.. Im not quite sure why there is so much controversy about this book but in my eyes I see a woman who was hurt and overcome this hurt by making it by herself. The question does come to mind why someone like herself would make up such a story... The thing is alot of families have secrets and black people being proud as we are want to believe that these things dont happen in ours, BUT THEY DO! Good on her I say. People like that deserve to be exposed! Every secret comes out eventually...
I can`t understand all the negative reviews.
This is an absolutely heartbreaking story and I found the cruelty dealt out to little constance unbearable to read at times I am left utterly shocked at the un-natural behaviour of her mother. This story goes way beyond abuse, but luckily constance is an exceptionally intelligent girl, and she figured out ways of dealing with every new frightening situation her mother threw her into. Good on you constance - you really are living proof that good wins over evil every time. Well done !!
A very UGLY Story
I have just finished this book, I hadn't read any reviews on this book before I read it and im glad. I like to read biographies, but I dont usually read books related to abused children but my son bought me this for Mother's day and I so I felt obliged to read it. I have to say that once you get over the poor grammer and realise it has been written 'child like' it does then put you into the mind of this child. I was shocked/horrified (note no sexual abuse as such) not sure the appropriate term to use for the story, but could not beleive that this child suffered so badly, the neglect and suffering her mother made her endure and no one noticed what was going on. Im devastated for Constance that so many things happened to her that just went on un-noticed or were seen to be aceptable. Thank goodness times have changed and if a child were to go to Social services and be asked to be taken into care, hopefully someone would investigate this and not ignore a childs pleas for help.

I found this a compelling read, I dont want to say i enjoyed this book as I didnt but yet I did, I certainly have given my kids many hugs and kisses etc over these past few days since ive been reading it. Well done Constance for being such a surviver.
Most Black people over 40 can relate to what the author had to put up with
Unfortunately this is the effect of a slave/colonial mentality that exist within us (Black people), where we were bought up to believe that to get anywhere in life you either had to look white or marry white, nothing positive was instilled about our blackness The word UGLY really means too Black (in colour) All darkskinned people had to put up with such rubbish, We went through all the the pain, heartache and anger in trying to assert ourselves. The road to finally discovering ourselves was not an easy path, we had to fight racism/bigotry from the whites, and ignorance/bigotry from my own race. I FULLY IDENTIFY, and can relate to what the author went through. I assume that most white people reading this will find this hard to believe, i have no problem with that, what i say is from mine and most black people's perspective WE HAVE LIVED IT. anyway 5 star is fully deserved and i highly recommend it.
