Perfect match for the AQA spec
|
Like the previous reviewer I use this book to deliver the AQA GCSE spec to adult learners and this will be the fourth year that I have used it (and the previous edition).
What I find particularly valuable about the book is that, unlike some competitor publications, each chapter is very clearly mapped to each element of the AQA spec - my learners know exactly where they are in the spec at all times.
The book has a fresh open, clear layout without resorting overmuch to 'flashy' graphics and colour. For learners not attempting the Higher Tier (ie only aiming at Foundation Tier) it is particularly useful that the elements of the text that are exclusive to HT are clearly identified by vertical lines in the margin.
Feedback from the learners is very positive - detail is about right and it's very easy to digest and find your way around. There's a good glossary.
Overall - excellent value for money and the only text the learner will need.

Almost perfect...... certainly the best around.

I use this book as set text for two evening classes of mature students and have found it to be invaluable for both their reference source and confirmation of my own session notes throughout each course. Barbara Woods follows the AQA requirements exactly and the book has especially good explanations of report writing and Methods of research.
It is reassuring to the student when they find no contradiction between the lessons and the set text. This is the scenario for my students... and without me having to compromise my own interpretations and session plans.
I would like to see a little more emphasis on examples of everyday application......... but then I would have nothing to do!

Easy to use

This book provides very good support for the AQA course. The sections are well layed out and easy to use and understand. In this, more up to date publication, there are additional chapters which help you plan, conduct and write your report(assignment). It also gave an indication of the marks awarded per section, which was very useful for determining what was required.

This is the updated version of Woods 'Basics in Psychology' - adapted to match the new AQA spec. It's very accessible and friendly though sometimes contains additional non-essential studies where more detail of key studies would be more appropriate. The students found it very easy to use and commented particularly on the effective layout and use of highlighting. For those studying AQA GCSE this is an essential text. For anyone else it provides a useful introduction & overview of numerous topic areas within Psychology without going overboard on unfamiliar terminology.
