Being there

If you have ever wondered how it must have felt to have been a child in the holocaust/ second world war then this is the book for you. I was transported instantly by Ligocka's use of language to a world of uncertainty and confusion. Although it starts with Ligocka's childhood it finishes well into her adulthood passing through not just the war period in Poland but her life after the war and how she coped with her relationships and artistic inner world. It was a great read and one that will open your eyes to a different world.

The Girl in the Red Coat is an autobiographical novel. Roma, the main character and author, is a Polish Jew growing up in Krakow during World War 2. Compellingly written, she describes life growing up under the harsh conditions and cruel circumstances of German control, Stalin and later Communism. Incredibly articulate and well written this autobiography displays an amazingly strong character which the reader immediately sympathises with as you are taken back in time and relive the events of Roma's past. A very compelling book which is almost impossible to put down.
