TY Standard Grade Physics Review
We recommend this book to our pupils studying Standard Grade Physics, particularly those aiming for a credit pass.

The book contains everything a student needs to succeed at Standard Grade. The pupils in my own school rate it highly, we even have youngsters who didn't get it in third year asking when they can order it in their fourth year. This is from an average comprehensive school in Scotland, not an academic hothouse. This is testimony to the effectiveness of the book.

Teach Yourself Standard Grade Physics starts off with a few pages of the psychology of revision. This section is easy to read and is realistic. The input of recognised brain expert Tony Buzan probably helps in this section.

The bulk of the book contains revision notes for the course. This is clearly written. Sentence structure is clear and simple. The text is supported by very clear line diagrams.

The book also provides a statement of the learning outcomes for the course (what the pupils have to learn for the exam). This helps to make the text relevant. As students work through the book, there are opportunities for thinking about the work covered in the form of questions. At the end of each topic, there is a round up test. This provides an ideal opportunity for revision prior to an end of unit test. Answers are provided, but no worked solutions. If you cannot see where an answer came from, help will be needed from a teacher (or other expert).

Overall, this book is an excellent resource for encouraging students to become more independant and confident in the learning. Use of this book should pay dividends when the exam comes round. It is the favoured book of our Physics department by a long way. I would like to stress that we have no connection with the authors or publishers and receive no commission from the book, we just think its great!
