Great Guideline for Beginners

I am currently studying Film and Television at university and already I am constantly referring to this book. Roberts and Wallis effortlessly get the right balance between useful detail and understandable references. I prefer to use this book to others such as 'Film Art' because it follows the structure of my course. The case studies are superb and use films that, whilst generally commercial and unoriginal choices, we can all easily relate to such as 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. The terms and theories are clear and concise, making this book a relatively cheap but informative guide to the film-making process. I also like the layout a lot as it begins with the straightforward subject of mise-en-scene and cinematography and then goes on to combine the various theories to help the reader understand a film's meaning/message. For its price, 'Introducing Film' is exceptional and definately worth a purchase. The more expensive books, such as 'Film Art' are quite intimidating to the beginner and those students in their first year, or indeed anyone getting into the subject. This however, isn't as off-putting and is very easy to get to grips with. For a cheaper, more of a pocket-book guide, buy 'Introducing Film'.
