I started an education degree (as a mature student) in October 2001 and I found this book an excellent way of gaining background information. It is clearly written, readable and up to date. This book starts off by providing an introduction to the development of childcare in the UK and then comparing it to the services offered by other European countries. It shows the importance of the role played by childcare workers who, although not necessarily qualified teachers, should be regarded as professionals in their own right. Other topics such as teaching literacy and numeracy are also covered, along with the underlying principle of equality. I am sure I will refer to it in future units. If only all my course text books were as good as this one!
