Research gaffe spoils this.

Yes - it's got all the Alice stuff in it, and then some. BUT - is it reliable ? Who knows ? Who but an Alice expert ?
As my yardstick, I used Dennis Potter's film DREAMCHILD, which - more than 20 years after its release - remains a favourite.
In THE ALICE COMPANION, the film is included, sure enough - but what idiot of a researcher can't be bothered to check the name of the actress who played Alice Hargreaves ? It's the main part, for goodness' sake. Write it out 100 times: Alice was played by CORAL BROWNE ... (Mrs Vincent Price, to you) ... NOT MAGGIE SMITH. If you don't know the answer at the time, look it up and make sure of your facts. Better still, see the film and READ THE CREDITS. It's an inexcusable error in a major publication (meaning there is no excuse for it) and one that is very unlikely to be corrected. More's the pity.
It spoils the book, and leaves a bitter taste. Save your money.
Sad.
