The Funniest Book In My Collection

Peter Tinniswood created a character that was unique: it seemed The Brigadier was the embodiment of that class of soldiers and administrators that preserved The Empire. He had all their prejudices, too, but what comes over from the pen of Peter Tinniswood is a caracature we can laugh at, and along with. From the" dear lady wife" with her "blasted Bedlington Terriers" and her "loathsome relations". "The Brigadier Down Under" tells of a holiday the two take to see her brother Naunton in Australia. The Brigadier of course just wants to see cricket ("our beloved summer game") but is dragged around at her behest. Beautifully written, you await a laugh in every paragraph and often are not disappointed. The Brigadiers' homespun philosophy from his village of Whitney Scrotum, close by Cowdrey's Bottom and Botham's Gut is totally dotty, and endearing. This book is a classic which no lover of humorous writing, cricket, or good literature should be without. I cannot praise the book too highly. It is sad that with Peter Tinniswood's early death, there will be no more of The Brigadier.
