This is wonder worker renamed
As a Susan Howatch fan I thought Id found a unread title when I came across this book. I bought it and settled down to read - only to find this is the Wonder Worker by another name. A fabulous book, but if like me you have Wonder Worker, be warned you don't need a question of integrity.

Great topic, shame about the characterisation
As with all of Susan Howatch's books, I am gripped and need to keep reading to find out what happens (although the dramatic highpoint is becoming increasingly predictable). However her characterisation is beginning to make me want to scream. It seems that she thinks of a catch-phrase for each main protagonist, then makes sure they say it at least once each page so that the reader doesn't forget what they are like. She also appears terribly concerned that the reader may forget the title of the book. Whereas most authors will let the reader just get on with reading, Howatch again makes sure that the title is quoted every few pages. These stylistic points are a particular shame as there is a dearth of writers attempting what she has done. As I say, I find her books difficult to put down, but I can't imagine wanting to pick any of them up a second time.

Inspiring

I really was inspired by this wonderful book, it was the first of hers I had read and what a pleasant surprise - it gave me a new insight into the Church and I finished it feeling comforted and satisfied. Great characters, great story - loved it!

The novel shows the triumph of faith, hope and truth
I read this book every couple of months and each time find something else of relevance or a detail possibly not noted previously which speaks directly into situations I am living through. The essence of the novel is to my mind the triumph of faith over fear, hope over despondency, truth over lies. The characters are engaging and detecting the interlinking with the previous Starbridge novels is enjoyable. Getting inside the head of each of the main characters gives a multi-faceted perspective on the situations covered within the novel, showing all too clearly that everyone has their perspective, and no-one bar God can really know the true motivation behind peoples' behaviour. The reader can't help but identify with the characters as they endure and struggle to find their way through the difficulties and challenges they encounter - as the chances are, we've all been somewhere similar at some time.

This is an excellent read.

This book was unputdownable. It was another in the series of Starbridge books. This must be the best one yet. The characters were so real and you are really involved in their dilemmas and how they interact with each other. It is so interesting to see the events from the different perspectives of the people involved. Can't wait for the next one.
