Quirky, interesting, humorous
|
|
unexpected from the first page, this little tale starts nowhere, ends nowhere but does it with a crass and knockabout style which makes it hugely enjoyable. The observations are crisp and the imagery vivid. There are flat points, and you have to relax into the world to avoid fighting the plausibility of the characters, however, this is not the point. Amusing, clever in places and overall a good read.

Funny, but not THAT funny
|
|
This is he first book by this author so I will try not to be too harsh. The book is funny places, but overall it just seems a bit too glib for my liking. Jokes are recycled throughout the book so you end up with almost constant deja vu as you read it.

Not a LOL book but an enjoyable enough romp
|
|
I bought this book purely on the reviews listed on Amazon and I have to say i was slightly disappointed. I was looking for a book which would make me laugh out loud but I just didn't find it that funny - and I don't believe I have a sense of humour bypass. However, once I realise i wasn't going to get many humourous anecdotes from this, I began to enjoy the read and admittedly, it was very quirky in its approach. There are parts of the author's prose which I could really associate with from an office perspective (cubicle mentality) but I think I'll be in the minority in not finding this book that comical. It's an enjoyable enough romp but it didn't crack me up.

Brilliant comedy, perfect for the passive aggresive stuck in a job they hate. (Like me)

If your feeling somewhat despondent with the world, and your office job really isn't making you feel as though your achieving all the things you were promised in your childhood, this is a perfect evening's release.
The book is incredably sharp, the wit is fantastic and as others have mentioned it is literally laugh-out-loud funny. The main character is someone you feel a great connection with as he acts out all the different things that you wish you could do in your office job (feel asleep during work, cut people down with comments, not care about anything generally). The plot, characters, dialgoue and pace all compliment each other in creating a cynical and cutting view of everything around.
The comedy within the book is memorable, particularly the one liners that suprise you in their delivery that makes the you burst out laughing when you least expect.
You will be using lines and ideas from this to amuse people around you who are unfortunate enough not to have read this book for a long time!

chapter 1 - interior - night -
|
cut to:
me, laughing out loud,(please note I'm not generally given to raucous outbursts whilst reading),at least 4 times - and that's only during chapter 1..
I woke up my boyfriend by accident whilst laughing..
most probably gave myself laughter lines I didn't have before..
so..
if you are amused by things that are ever-so-slightly twisted..
or more than slightly maybe..
hard to say how twisted it is when what's offensive to one may not be so to another (ie me)...
but yes if you like something out of the ordinary but not so much so that it makes no sense or is pretentious drivel then I urge you to read this book..
It's clever, it's unusual, I love it..one of those times when you think aha this person thinks in a similar way to my very own self - how delightful!
but this isn't about me - it's about you and your hard earned cash - go on- spend some of it on this little masterpiece!
cut to:
me reading it again :)
