A good look at the best science fiction short stories of '98
|
|
Gardner Dozois has been doing Year's Best anthologies for a long time now, not only selecting the best short stories of the year, but also giving a much needed overview of the year in sf. In this installment, the outstanding stories are "Story of Your Life", by Ted Chiang, "Oceanic", by Greg Egan and "Divided by Infinity", by Robert Charles Wilson. All three manage to combine a solid core of hard sf speculation with a real humanity in depicting their characters. Other good work is delivered by Bruce Sterling, Paul J. MacAuley, Micjael Swanwick and Tanith Lee. No real bad stories present, though not everything is of the same high standard.
