Essential - An African Classic!
|
This is easily the best of Capstick's books and the one that I can't resist going back to.
Capstick writes with absolute authority on an Africa which is rapidly receding into the past.
His writing style remains undated, as readable as a tabloid newspaper and as exciting as any Forsyth thriller. Just one chapter will leave you hooked.
Even as I pick up my copy I can feel my heart start to pound, feel the dust of Africa under my feet, smell the whiff of cordite and hot metal, taste the tang of blood.
Few of us can now have the privilege of hunting wild elephants or buffalo but we can at least re-live the hunts of the past through Capstick's work.
This is not a book for the squeamish but it remains essential reading for anyone planning to visit Africa with a camera or a rifle.

Funny, frightening & Gripping
|
|
Capsticks adventures as a professional hunter in Africa are often hilariously funny usually quite terrifying and always absolutely gripping. This is a book which you will want never to end and Capstick, the kind of character who I would like to meet in a straw roofed bar, in distant climes.

Awesome!!!

I read this book midway through my time working on a game farm in Africa. It totally changed my perspective of the animals and I found myself constantly watching my shadow! Riveting stories, hilarious anecdotes and a must read for anyone with an appetite for adventure and a love of the African bush.

Compelling read, sadley for the wrong reasons
|
|
Although I was disgusted by the gratuitous slaughter of magnificent animals dipicted in the book I was still fascinated by the author's stories of interactions with the various animals, his description of old africa and his theories and observation of animal behaviour. The book is very well written and good value but, as an avid conservationist, I find it a very sad that some of the best books on old africa are based on observations down the barrel of a gun.

If you read it, you will buy more Capstick!

I read in the Long grass, and in 3 years time sought out every other Capstick book, I could get my hands on. You will too. Nothing left for me but to stand in the tall grass with rifle in hand, sweat in my eyes, dust in my throat and look the king of beasts in the eye. Only one of us will walk away....
