excellent review of the 20th centuries female writers
|
i read this book after reading Mad Woman in the Attic, and believe me it is just as good. Here, Gilbert and Gubar focus on women writers of the early twentieth century, although of course they do make references to nineteeth century writers, such as those discussed in Mad Woman. As a literature student focusing on the modernism period i found Gilbert and Gubar's text to be unbelievably insightful, drawing on motifs and issues that had gone unnoticed by myself, placing texts in a new light. For example, their arguments on the relationship between art and gender in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse were not only helpful when writing my essays but also extremely easy to read, being both informative and entertaining. If you have any intrest in women's writing this book is for you. Although quite chunky it is a good read, as well as an excellent resource for references. I admitt i haven't read the other volumes in this series yet but believe me i intend to!
