Customer Reviews:
Good, but not vital for your collection
This book is something of a jack of all trades, master of none. Yet, at the same time, it's also very informative. There's essays on the origin of the word 'vampire' itself, alongside logical and scientific roots for the vampire myths and an exploration of the medical 'vampire'.

However, at the end of the day, this volume plays around the edge for most people. For those interested in the folklore, this book has little to offer, save the interesting bits here and there. For those interested in any of the topics mentioned in the previous paragraphs, there are a dozen other books dedicated to the subjects that cover them in far greater depth.

While I don't want to detract this fascinating book, it does appear to be the jack, rather than the master of the trades.

Is this wonderful piece of literature on your bookshelf?????
If you are like me, and have always had a strong interest in the study of vampirism, then I would strongly reccommend this book. It provides a valuable insight into the myths and legends of the vampire. The colourful and vivid language used in this wonderful piece of literature allow your mind to explore the possibilities that we may encounter. This novel also explores the vampires of different lands, tracing back to their roots. A must buy book without a doubt. One that your growing bookshelf simply cannot do without!! Should you have any questions relating to this book or questions relating to vampirism, please don't hesitate to contact me via email, I would be most pleased to hear from you!

Good stuff.
Fascinating subject matter that is allowed several intelligent, scholarly essays from varying time periods which themselves include large chunks of primary material. Admittedly there is a little overlap in these, but this is perhaps unavoidable. Of particular interest are the detailed chapters on traditional methods in folklore of dispatching vampires. For example, I was intrigued by some of the suggestions regarding the origin of the 'stake through the heart' method, favoured by practically every fictional vampire slayer. It's nice to see a book like this that is not afraid to take its subject seriously.
Eleven scholars unearth the legend.
The vampire of literature and films is perhaps too familiar, but the underpinnings of the legends in the folk traditions of southeastern Europe are quite different from the popular image, and more interesting.
Eleven fascinating essays by scholars in Slavic studies, anthropology, history, and psychiatry here illuminate this dark corner of primitive imagination, show how such a seemingly bizarre belief is tied to certain folk practices of exhumation, bring the studies up to date with cases of modern "vampires", and offer a psychoanalytic interpretation of the phenomenon. (The "score" rating is an unfortunately ineradicable feature of the page. This reviewer does not "score" books.)
