Szasz Exposes the Therapeutic State
|
|
In Pharmacracy, Thomas Szasz explains that the state's poowers are expanding to take more control of our personal lives in the name of medicine. The war on drugs and psychiatry are both coercive moral and legal institutions that the state justifies in terms of a sort of pseudomedical rhetoric. Szasz exposes this rhetoric in his usual clear and witty style, pointing out that psychiatrists are the only doctors who can discover diseases using a dictionary, as opposed to scientific investigations of human bodies. Anyone who wants to understand politics properly should buy this book.
