A stark look at human suggestibility
|
This is a retelling of the story of the burning of Brigid Clery by her husband and family who had taken her for a changeling - a fairy substitute for the real person.
Carlo Gebler makes the dark side of human nature plausible. This is a beautiful well researched book which recovers the feel of the period, the gentle nature of Brigid, the confusion of decency and principle which turns her husband into a violent killer.
You come away from this not marvelling at how recently these events happened but understanding that they could yet happen again.
