Great companion when reading Lattimore's Iliad
This book is invaluable if you are reading Lattimore's Iliad for the first time. Along with book summaries, it gives a line-by-line commentary explaining the historical context of some of Homer's character phrases, as well as meanings of words that are unfamiliar. It made my first reading of the Iliad much more easy and enjoyable. This is recommended not only to first-time readers but also to people who want a deeper knowledge into Homer's world.

Excellent book for the beginner or undergraduate student

This book is an excellent purchase alongside The Iliad. It was an indispensable addition and help to my study and understanding of this widely accepted cornerstone of western culture. If you are going to make the morethan worthwhile effort of reading and exploring Lattimores very good translation of what must be one of the most emotive and all encompassing stories of human suffering and redemption then this book is a must.
