An interesting curiosity for Bond fans.........
|
This unique Bond spin-off was officially sanctioned/commissioned by Glidrose Productions (and maybe was planned as the first of a series?) Whatever the identity of the writer behind the pseudonym R.D.Mascott, he or she had clearly read the Fleming Bonds closely as there are some obvious instances of similarity - our hero James Bond 003 and a half (nephew of 007) battling on through the pain barrier to try to achieve his mission, for example. Although this is a book aimed at young readers, there are some surprisingly adult references - "secret flattened places (in a forest) left by lovers" and the illicit growing of marijuana. There is also mention, albeit briefly, of a character named "Chastity Carstairs, the girl in the rubber jodhpurs". Very Fleming like. Despite being published as recently as 1967, there are some surprisingly un-politically correct descriptions as well- the "Bond girl" Sheelagh Smith is descibed at one point as a "nit-ridden gyppo"! This book really is worth reading. It is a necessary part of any serious Bond collection.
