Heroic Hendo
|
This is a lovely book. Great, both as a read and a reference point. Witty and educational, it will be enjoyed by pretty much all ages, and not just those with a glorious sporting past or future. Already a source of debate in three generations of my family. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Thank you Jonny.

... NOT being much of a sporting hero myself

Not being much of a sporting hero myself, I found it hard to put this book down. Written with great wit and full of factual information, which is never turgid, Hendo builds lively human portraits that are compulsive!

Great for any sport-mad household

Really entertaining read and a book to dip in and out of over a cup of tea - captures the character and achievements of a diverse selection 'heroes' in very lively succession. A great present for any sports mad household.

You don't have to be sports-mad

So readable even if you know and care little about the sport concerned. It's the superb writing and the glimpses into so many lives that make this a masterpiece. Every "best of" list in the world is subjective and it's silly to quibble at the selection. Keep it up and give us more like it!

A great book to have around

Like art, food, wine and music, all choices and tastes are bound to be personal. Anyone who quibbles with an author's choice of who they personally found heroic, should obviously be writing and not reading a book. Hendo has winkled out some cracking stories and created lively and bright snapshots of the life and times of his own personal sporting heroes. Many of the names are shrouded in the mists of time, hidden away in the shady recesses of memory and it is a real pleasure to shine a light onto some of those names and remember and celebrate their achievements. The book ranges in time from Robin Hood to the modern, with stops at all ages in between. The book is a delight, and should be an essential part of any sporting collection.
