Well laid out but poorly edited
|
I bought this dictionary thinking it would be adequate for beginner level. Only 18 weeks into my course I'm already finding it insufficient.
Inevitably, due to its size, there is going to be a limit on the amount of information it can contain but a lot of the problem is due to poor editing. For example, when I look up verb 'salgo', it rightly directs me to the infinitive, 'salir'. The only problem is they've forgotten to put an entry in for 'salir'. This is not the only instance where common words are absent and I wonder whether this dictionary is being sold on reputation rather than quality.

useful as a supplement to a bigger dictionary

This isn't a phrase book, or a dictionary for beginners, so it isn't really what you want if you're a tourist visiting a Spanish speaking country. However, if you use Spanish at work, or are learning Spanish and you need a dictionary I recommend having a larger dictionary for reference when at home/in school/in the office and get this one for when you want to travel light. It's invaluable for finding out what that annoying little word is, but it's too small to rely upon for heavy usage, such as writing reports or doing homework.
