Anderson and May's book contains a wealth of knowledge from two of the founding fathers of modern epidemiology. Anderson has been chief scientific advisor to the UK government and May is President of the Royal Society. That said, this book is both interesting and accessible. The authors have drawn together a wide and complex field, previously open only to those with advanced mathematical skills and made it available to anyone with a basic aptitude for maths. Basic principles are outlined and built on in later chapters, covering topics such as modelling directly transmitted infections, vector born and sexually transmitted diseases. Common assumptions are clearly illuminated and discussed along with advice on how to avoid numerous pitfalls. This is the "Standard text" that all infectious disease modellers should have.
