A heart warming fantasy.
|
This is the first book by Charles De Lint that I have read and I must say that I am very impressed and intend to read more of his books in the near future. The book centres around a young werewolf called kern who yearns for human companionship, but fears becoming close to anyone in case they learn of his dual nature, who is taken in and befriended by a group of orphans. But it is not long before his adversary, a villianous harper/mage, shows up determined to ruin his happiness and ultimately kill him.
The story is simple but great and Charles De Lint manages to create characters that you will instantly take a liking to. The way the werewolf lives with and percieves unfounded human prejudice against his kind is brilliantly handled. All in all this is one of the most thoughtful, romantic and original werewolf novels that you will ever read.

Out of print for many years, it tells you something very positive about this early work of De Lint's that it's being reissued now! Strong characters, a werewolf hero fighting against prejudice, a bardic villain, a compelling plot, curlicues of magic, and depictions of love in its myriad forms. Fans of heroic fantasy will love this book.
