Customer Reviews:
Unexpected
this was a bit of an odd book to get into at first as it wasnt anything like i expected it to be. however after a few pages i soon settled into it and i was sorry that it had to finish. i found itthe perfect book to read whilst drinking endless cups of tea and coffee on a saturday afternoon at the kitchen table.

im currently half way through it again and its still as enjoyable second time around!

BUY,BORROW OR STEAL IT. READ THIS SOMEHOW
Boring & Dull
I love autobiographies and will read anyone's but this was boring in the extreme. Anything that was interesting in Joanna's life has probably been left out (because nobody could be this dull). Couldn't wait to get to the end and only succeeded in doing so by scanning. Disappointing to say the least.
Intriguing
Having read this book I feel new respect for Ms Lumley - and I respected her before. She is many things: an intrepid traveller, unpretentious about everything, hands-on when it comes to supporting inventive projects (the Frogmat stuff is interesting), and evidently an experiencer of paranormal things. I skipped a few pages of travelogue, but generally found her book fascinating, not least because it is devoid of regret and self criticism - how many memoirs are like that? An intriguing insight into her life and her house.
Philosophical Ramblings
Having admired Ms Lumley's blend of classic style and talent for a number of years, I was pleased to dip into her memoirs, but unfortunately I was more than a little disappointed. The books is structured in a rather strange way for a showbiz autobiography and the rooms in Lumley's house form metaphors for different time periods/aspects of her life. I'm not quite sure the Question and Answer aspect of the book particularly worked and it distracted from the narrative somewhat. Perhaps Lumley did not wish to 'dish the dirt' on previous roles and relationships, but as a reader, I yearned to know more about this fascinating woman.
A disappointing missed opportunity
I found parts of the book interesting but it only scratched the surface and the style of Q & A by someone supposed to be representing the reader was disruptive.By using the devise of wandering round her house and the memories prompted souvenirs and mememtos felt to me disjointed.
