Editorial Reviews:
The Improbable Cat by award-winning children's writer Allan Ahlberg is a brief-but-spooky little book that sends shivers down the spine. A seemingly harmless kitten arrives, impossibly cute and limping, in the Burrell family's garden begging them to take care of it with its big eyes and adorable fluffiness. But as the kitten grows--and grows and grows and grows--the family, with the exception of narrator Davy and his trusty dog Billy, seem to be under some kind of spell, and begins to fall apart...

Ahlberg, as always on top form, presents the reader with a classic chiller of a tale, written simply but with a writhing creepiness that builds gradually to its sinister conclusion. The Improbable Cat is clever, concise and packs a chilling punch that makes it an ideal tale of the unexpected for even the most reluctant of young readers to share with their friends around the campfire in the dead of night... Age 7 and over.--Susan Harrison

Customer Reviews:
Not impressed
The book is well presented and easy to read but unfortunately I hated it. I found it rather depressing and I think I must have missed the point of it completely..... if there was a point.
Certainly do not buy it for children who like cats.
The Improbable Cat - a classic for sure
This beautifully presented, compact, read-in-one-session book instantly grips the reader. It is a precious gem of a story, in the same format as Allan Ahlberg's "My Brother's Ghost". I thought it was even better, appealling directly to the reader and full of intrigue and ever increasing horror. Peter Bailey's illustrations capture the mood of the book perfectly. Its clever end concludes the story without explaining fully, thereby leaving the reader full of contemplation. I like a book where I continue considering it long after the end. It is a book I shall surely re-read, (especially out loud to my class of ten-year-olds).However a word of warning: perhaps not an ideal gift to give to cat-lovers, I shall never regard the neighbour's "moggy" in the same light!
