Italy and Berlusconi
|
The author gives a parallel analysis of - at least - six themes: 1. Italian post-war history. 2. Berlusconi's personal history. 3. Berlusconi's political career (or pseudo career). 4. The general influence of the
mafia on Italian politics. 5. The organising of economic transactions carried out by persons co-operating with the mafia. 6. Legal problems in the fight against organized crime. These are all heavy subjects
and they are all relevant to Italian political life. The weakness of the book is that the subjects are discussed over only 292 pages (paperback edition). In my opinion the book should have been given
twice as many pages to cover the subjects that are taken up. Alternatively the author should have made heavy cuts in the manuscript - leaving out numerous details - to obtain a clear-cut and general
survey of the problems that are taken up. This book left me in a state of bewilderment: After having read an enormous number of details, I asked myself: To which conclusions are all these details
bringing me? However, my critical remarks should not hide the fact that the author undoubtedly has an enormous knowledge of Italian politics, its problems and personalities. This book has its qualities,
but also its shortcomings.
