Boldly going where the facts do not lead
|
For those of us who know that `man-made global warming' is just a scam, this well presented book is still worth reading. It is a persuasive read.
Skeptics fail to study it at their peril because it masters the subtle emotive arguments. Countering the Climate Change Lobby with facts alone is not going to work--the Lobby has a head start and powerful vested interests behind it. The purpose is to enrich the coffers of governments and global corporates, and to ensure a flow of copious grants into academia,
That the author, deep down, does not trust his own case is suggested by the call he has publically made several times to criminalize anyone who questions the orthodoxies he supports. On a 19th May 2008 press conference, Dr. Arthur Robinson announced the release of the names of 32,000 scientists who have signed a strongly worded petition dissenting from the position taken by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Since that is the position also of this professor, his proposed Thought Police might be very busy.
I can only give this book one star for its science and conclusions, but it is worth reading for excellent salesmanship.

The forerunner

Hillman's book is the original call-to-arms. For years he has been telling people what they don't want to hear and this book is a distillation of his message - it's uncomfortable but essential reading for everyone. We have to cut our emissions now but more importantly the government MUST take a lead and push for carbon rationing. One of the most important books of this new century.

Not going to go into the same amount of detail as the other reviews...

But, they are all correct about the importance of this book. And I fully encourage anyone to buy it.

Saving the planet?: more relevant than ever!

The arguments put forward by the authors of this book started out on the 'fringes', but are increasingly mainstream. Other writers, notably George Monbiot, and politicians, notably David Milliband, have recently taken an active interest in the concept of personal carbon rations (or allowances) as a practical response to the threat of climate change, and hopefully we're moving forward following the Stern Report etc. However, we really need to get beyond the 'fine words' and make some fairly urgent and radical changes. Mayer Hillman and Tina Fawcett's book still offers one of the clearest and most concise briefings and agenda-setting exercises on this vital issue. The authors summarise the problem, critique many popular 'solutions' and set out an agenda for individual, corporate and governmental action. It mangages to be a scary, enlightening and (ultimately) quite positive journey - if you haven't read it already, now's the time!!! (November 2006)

A clear, practical and urgent call for action.

In an easy to understand, yet comprehensive account of global warming, Mayer Hillman sets out the problem, explaining how global warming is happening, and why it must be avoided. The current strategies, mainly of the UK government and industry is described, and presented as woefully inadequate. Finally, the book explains a fair and just system of reducing our CO2 emissions, and how we as a society and as individuals can track and reduce our own contribution to the problem. Mayer Hillman adopts just the right tone, neither being too overbearing nor too patronising. The message comes through loud and clear: we are all responsible for climate change due to CO2 emissions, and we must all do something about it. Required reading for everyone on planet earth.
