I'd never read any Dick Francis novels before, so I thought I'd read this just to see what they are like. It is set in the racing world, as one would expect, and tells of the investigations of Sid Halley, a former jockey turned investigator. The story is original, and to my knowledge has not been done before, and this made the book refreshing and interesting to read. It is more violent than I was expecting but this does not detract from the quality of the story. One soon gets gripped by the story and becomes keen to follow it through to the end. - Surely the sign of a good book. While I think the character development was at times questionable, and the ending weaker than it should have been, this is a solid thriller, better than a lot out there.
