The Adventures of Bert is the result of the collaboration between Allan Ahlberg (Peepo!, Please Mrs Butler, The Jolly Postman) and Raymond Briggs (The Snowman, Fungus the Bogeyman, Ug. These two children's books heavyweights have each notched up a number of classics, and with The Adventures of Bert it looks like together they may have come up trumps once again. Bert is a sublimely comic, hapless and harmless nincompoop, married to the long-suffering Mrs Bert and father to (though goodness knows how he managed it!) Baby Bert. Bert is just a little bit accident prone: ask him to try on a shirt and he'll end up in the back of a lorry (don't ask). Give him a cardboard box (again, don't ask), and somehow he will end up nearly drowning in a river. And if by any chance he should see a sausage... Simple text, which cleverly encourages interaction, and bold illustration combine in a simply superb, utterly riotous picture book about a large, lovable noodlehead with instant appeal to both children and adults. An absolute must read for any age group. (Age 3 and over) --Susan Harrison
