Customer Reviews:
Lark Rise
An excellent book which gives a down to earth realistic view of lifestyle and evironment now almost gone from living memory. A real view of how we used to be.
A trip further than memory lane
This is a look back at life around the turn of the twentieth century in a poor English hamlet. What makes for interest is the changes that have occurred in society in just one hundred years making this an ideal book for the very young (who have little idea of what life could possibly be like at this time with no Game Boys or sweets) and the very old to reminisce simpler times.
This very much reminded me of Laurie Lee's Cider With Rosie but unfortunately Thompson doesn't posses the lyrical poetry that makes Lee's book a near masterpiece. Still this is a very enjoyable read and gives a good insight to late Victorian social history.
