Customer Reviews:
This method works! A long term view
Ten years ago I taught my struggling, non-reading child to read over nine months using this book systematically and working for about 40 minutes every day. Three A levels achieved at grade A (including essay type answers) are pretty good evidence that the method works and that real lasting understanding of how to read and spell were gained.
I passed on my original copy for another dyslexic child and am now buying a new copy for another young person.
A book that changed our lives.
Over the past year Reading Relfex and the methodology of Phono-Graphix has allowed our young son, who had been "diagnosed" as dyslexic, to develop his reading ability and understanding to a level far beyound what we, the school or even the "Learning Specialists" had achieved in the prevous 6 to 7 years.
This book (methodology) provided the answers to the challenges he was facing and helped him not only develop his reading skills but find the confidence to enjoy books.
With a good understanding of the codes used he is now progressing to the next stage and is using the follow on methodology found in the McGuinness's book "How to increase your child's Verbal Intelligence" to develop his skills further.
Highly recommended, should be adopted by all English speaking schools.
Buy this book!
I bought this book as I suspected that my daughter was not enjoying the initial 'learning to read' exercises in school. How right I was! We started on the Sunday after I bought it and by the Wednesday she was reading on her own (the simple stuff of course but still). I highly recommend this as way to engage your child in learning to reading. The interactive nature of the exercises and the presentation keeps her interested and the whole thing feels like a game. Can't recommend it enough.
Reflex Reading
We bought this book for my son (age 5) who was not enjoying his first English lessons at school. Over a period of about 3 months he has become enthusiastic and confident about reading and writing and has made great progress in his class.
I would recommend this book to any parent with a child learning to read. The exercises are clear, straightforward and fun. I spend about 30 minutes, 3 days a week working through the book. One of the best things about this book is that it provides my son with the knowledge he needs to "work out" words whether he has come across them previously or not. He now has an automatic response to make the sounds he hears in the words and then to blend them together to get the word.
I am enjoying working together with my son ,seeing his progress and emerging confidence at first hand. The book is great; Buy it!
An easy way to give your children the best start in reading
I used the 'Phonographix' methods in The Reading Reflex with my eldest son (6) and he is off to a great start with his reading. When he first started school he would come home with reading books and tell me it was ok to have a guess. I explained that things were different at home from at school and that guessing wasn't the way I wanted him to read. We worked through the exercises in The Reading Reflex and I gave him real books with plenty of basic text (eg. Dr Seuss). Now he can read almost anything as he has the tools needed to decode the English language. He is still learning some 'sound pictures' but as he is a confident reader who never has a book far from his side, he is getting plenty of experience with new 'sound pictures' all the time. Now he is needing to write more himself, this method is also a great help with teaching spelling.
I am now just starting my second son (nearly 5) on the basic code exercises. He doesn't see them as hard work but enjoys the 'word games' we do and feels really good when he can already read lots of words.
The book explains learning to read in a way that makes sense. The exercises are all set out for you and are easy to follow so any parent can work through it with their child. The pace of the programme allows both you and the child to feel like you're really achieving something so it is easy to stay motivated.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to any parent or teacher. Reading is just too important to leave up to chance!
