Phenomenal

This was one of my favorite books during High School. It provides a wonderful insight into the clash of cultures resulting from Apartheid, as well as a dramatic story (even more so because of its truth) of the author's escape.

A very worthwhile read

I read this book for the first time many years ago when the film Cry Freedom (which was based, in part, on this book) was out. I reread it recently after the death of the author Donald Woods, who was a remarkable figure in the fight against apartheid. The film Cry Freedom eloquently charted Woods' conversion from a white liberal to a freedom fighter through his unique friendship with black activist, Steve Biko. This, his autobiography, gives a more detailed account of that incredibly important and influential time in his life, but it is also the life-story of a sharply intelligent and funny, daring man, at the center of the time and world he inhabited in apartheid-era South Africa. An extremely enjoyable read.
