Fascinating and beautiful introduction to the oceans

I wanted to learn about oceanography, and this book turned out to be just what I wanted. Although it is a textbook, and covers some quite advanced topics, it is extremely user-friendly and easy to follow. I don't think any previous background would be necessary to understand all of the content. There are also some interesting pedagogic devices - "questions students often ask" are particularly interesting. The book covers every aspect of the oceans that I can think of: how they originated, geology (particularly plate tectonics), salinity, climate, currents, exploration, animal life ... Furthermore, the colour illustrations (diagrams and photographs) are exceptionally useful but also beautiful.
