Dreamweaver 4 Virtual Classroom is a book/CD package that provides a step-by-step course for Macromedia's popular Web-authoring tool. Aimed at beginners, it runs from Dreamweaver basics through to animating pages with Javascript behaviours. The supplied CD-ROM is not just the usual bundle of demos and examples, but rather a set of tutorials presented as RealPlayer videos, showing the author speaking alongside animated Dreamweaver screens. They run on either Windows or the Apple Macintosh. Around half the chapters have matching tutorials, the idea being that you first read up on a topic, and then see it demonstrated on screen. The book itself uses large type, numbered steps and plentiful illustrations to make it easy to use. Beginning with an overview, it covers Dreamweaver's site planning features, working with text and images, and using links and tables. Further chapters tackle forms, frames, layers and style sheets. The final chapters are more advanced, looking at multimedia, Javascript behaviours, Dreamweaver assets and libraries, and managing your site both locally and on a remote server. An appendix gives a brief glimpse at HTML, the code behind Web pages, but in general this is a book for those who prefer to work through Dreamweaver's visual tools. Throughout the text, panelled tips and notes give helpful insights into professional web design. Overall this is an effective Dreamweaver tutorial although it does not pretend to go into great depth. The video lessons nicely complement the book and let you take a break from reading from time to time. --Tim Anderson
