The story of The Great One
|
Although sports players autobiographies are hardly unusual these days, this book was one of the first attempts made and in my opinion one of the best. If anyone feels entitled to share their life experiences with us, then it should surely be Wayne Gretzky, the all-time NHL legend whose scoring totals are not likely to be bettered for a long time, and one of the most pleasant characters in the hard-hitting sport of hockey. The book is written in the man's easy going style, and as such is extremely readable. We see his insights into all parts of the hockey game, and especially his huge trade to the Los Angeles Kings which stunned the hockey world and Gretzky himself. It could be argued this led to the Oilers steady fall from the top, even though they did continue on to another Stanley Cup under the leadership of Mark Messier. Overall, though the book can be a bit bland at times it is a highly readable account of perhaps the biggest legend of all time in the NHL, and as such is worth the investment.
