Editorial Reviews:
Val McDermid just gets better and better. The Last Temptation is intelligent about undercover police work and psychological profiling as well as moving on the human cost to the people who have to do society's dirty work.

We are back with profiler Tony Hills and super-competent cop Carol, who we met in The Mermaids Singing and The Wire in the Blood. The couple's past experiences have created a bond between them as well as a certain inability to bear the sight of each other. They are brought back into co-operation by the needs of the job in its European dimension. Tony is persuaded to help track a European killer who drowns and mutilates psychologists, while Carol is working undercover to trap a drug trafficker whose dead lover spookily resembles her.

As always, McDermid writes brilliant criminals. She adds that deadening of sympathy which makes horror possible. Both aristocratic gangster Tadeusz and vengeful psychotic Mann have their reasons for being who they are, doing what they do. McDermid makes us care that her detectives succeed and survive just that little bit more than we care for her villains to escape. She writes excellent thrillers simply because she has a journalist's eye for both sides of each case. --Roz Kaveney

Customer Reviews:
McDermid's - Temptation
The Last Temptation is a brilliant read, essential for any reader of the first two Dr.Tony Hill & D.C.I. Carol Jordan books!

Crossing more than geographical boarders, a gripping read abounding in psychological twists, not just of this 'Temptation' but interweaving with the emotions and experiences of the previous books in the trilogy! No one lays bare the dark deep human emotions better than this author. I wish I had not waited for Rankin to retire before reading every other book of hers; the great insights of pain/pleasure, bad/good, raw humanity and great insights into mind games from Val McDermid is like reading a 3D mind map of human thought -superb!!!
Flat and boring
I have read three other Val McDermid novels and really enjoyed them. Good plots and some tight writing. But I stopped reading this one after 150 pages. Too much of the writing was padding that gave so much insight into the villains' minds that there was absolutely no sense of suspense or anticipation. I think the editor should have insisted on a shorter novel that revealed much less until the concluding pages. But it hasn't put me off reading more of her novels. I can tolerate the odd turkey. TIP: don't read this as your first Val McDermid novel.
better than the last!
This is the 3rd in the series involving characters Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan.
I found this a better read than the last one but still not as good as the first.
Tony Hill and Carol Jordan work on seperate cases whereas in the other books they work together.I thought there wasn't enough involvement with Tony Hill and most of the plot involved Carol Jordan undercover.
This is still an intense read with a good story and a nail biting finish!
Didn't blow me away
It was good and readable and I didn't kind of end up caring about the characters but it wasn't the best or the most gripping i have ever read.
Exciting, interesting and enjoyable
This book is definately one I found to be a good read.
I came across Val McDermid a couple of years ago through a £1 per book offer being run by WHSmith and The Times and have read several of her books since and found them all to be damn good reads.
This is the third in a series using the same characters - I have not read the other 2 but didn't feel that it cause any problems with my enjoyment of this one.
I was a little disappointed with some of the areas of the plot and the fact that events seem to roll out a bit too conveniently, that said I did enjoy the pace of the book and the way the tension built gradually during towards a great ending.
