Cracking NN
|
Ratcliffe is an engaging writer and his thorough account goes beyond the formulaic dryness of less successful NNs. There is an elegaic sense of what has been lost as well as the richness of what must be preserved in the region. Ratcliffe is not afraid to make frank attacks at destructive land management and go beyond the mealy-mouthed compromises that haunt our current attitudes to the environment.
Not having more than a passing acquaintance with this part of Scotland I'm not in a position to say how well-judged the content of the text is, but it has filled me with the desire to go to Galloway and find out.
A ravishing book in terms of its production and physicality. Gilmour's jacket design is one of his best.
