The book is exciting, mysterious and hilarious, with realistic characters. It begins with a normal teenager, who gets into so much trouble. He enters the classroom and knocks over a pot of rulers, books, and boxes of cassettes. Then the pupils of Mr.Cartrights class have to do a flour baby experiment. Simon slowly changes and begins to care for his flour baby. He turns into a 'mother' who cares for his child like nothing before. Then he starts to think about his father who abandoned him when he was only a baby, and he knows a song that his dad sang that tells him why he left, but he does not know the last two lines. The good points and the bad points are that the characters are very emotional and realistic. Their background and personality are very well developed. The setting of the school is described in brilliant detail and the effect it has in being a play makes it much easier to read and understand, but it does make it harder to read on your own. There was a reason for Anne Fine to write this book, that reason was to send out a message that not all men are bad fathers, and that boys can care for babies. By Cheree O'melia and Chloe Male.

Emotional, but brilliant

This is a very interesting book. It is basically about a boys school and the project of Flour babies. Where the boys have to look after babys made our of bags of flour! You can imagine what they think...but one boy Simon Martin takes a very different view. After a few days simon gets thinking about his long lost father....Why did he leave? What was the last line of the song? What happens in the end? Read to find out!

After reading the play based on Anne Fine's novel, "flour Babies", we have decided we have mixed veiws on the play. The plot is about a boy called Simon, who goes to school and is given a flour baby to look after. He begins to wonder about his father, who left him and his mother when he was just a baby. Although the characters and events can be funny, there are many serious issues hidden within the text. The opening of the story is quite interesting in the way that the immediate diologue draws you into the story. the story is full of emotions and feelings, this makes you feel closer to the characters. The characters are potrayed well and this triggers the imagination. Some of the bad points about the story are: .the slow paced plot .it contains many gender issuses which younger readers may not come to terms with. However, the bad points are heavily out done by the good ones. .Anne Fine manages to capture the mischief and language of the young boys. .Anne Fine gives you a vivid picture of the characters and you feel like you know them. Altogther, we have given the play, "Flour Babies" a well deserved 3 stars!

A delightful and emotional play recomendend for any one.

This story is about how boys can cope with more feminine issues. It explains the feelings of a young teenage boy when he becomes confronted with a flour baby and it reconflicts the hurtful feelings concerning him and his mother when his father left when he was just a baby. His life is changed when the flour babies are given out as an experiment by his teacher Mr Cartright. The opening is quite dramaticas Mrs Arnott makes a big entrancce with her asprin. There are many diffrent personalitie's in charecters. There is a boy called Simon.( the main charecter.)who's personalitiy changes through out the story. The boys in his classare very laid back. They do not really care about any thing that is going on! then there is Mrs Arnott who is very shaken up about the goings on around her. After reading this play we think that it is a very enjoyable and emotionable story. We recomend this novel to anyone probably over the age of nine. An interesting read for all ages.

In places this play can be lifeless and have a slow paced plot although it is mainly quite dramatic and fascinating. It is an interesting story of a boys' school having the experience of caring for Flour Babies. Simon(the main character) changes his attitude throughout the play, from beginning to end. The story is quite descriptive as the many different climaxes build. Reading this play in our class(concurrently) we found it easier than having to read the play alone. We feel this way because in class we get to experience the characters emotions, individualy. The play raises a few gender issues about child development and it is amusing to see males taking on 'so-called' female roles.
