It is very useful that this edition includes the original outline of the story along with Robert Browning's poem of this famous legend. It provides very useful pre-twentieth century links to tie in with National Curriculum requirements. Pupils love to read this play aloud, and take part in Drama activities. This gives all students the opportunity to try directing a short scene in small groups. The stage directions are clear and helpful, and enable the reader to visualise the play on stage, even on a first reading. Useful activites are provided at the back of the book, along with suggestions for staging the play. Every time I read it, I enjoy the 'Council Chamber' scenes with the comical, stereotypical councillors more and more. My classes love to draw caricatures based on them. Overall, an excellent publication which brings this classic story up to date.
