I completely fell in love with this book when I read it when I was young. As an adult my appreciation of it has not diminished but grew. The hero Tristan is very engaging and I adore Thomas the cat, and Minstrel the canary who are brillant and definately steal your heart. This book is for all ages and I cannot sing its praises high enough. Read this book today, you will not be disapointed.

a well told story with great characters

the book follows the traditional heros progress idea, with tristran starting out as an untrained apprentice and gradually becoming more competent in his role. the basic plot is good and there are some unexpected twists to the story, which certainly adds to it. the characters are believable, having an internal life, not just one dimensional beings and the overall story telling is very vivid. overall very good
